How many families will you help this year?

Affordable housing is more important now than ever.

Now more than ever before, we are learning just how important it is to have a good home. This pandemic has highlighted the need for more affordable housing in Eastern Kentucky and throughout the country, because how can you be "healthy at home" if you don't have a home or the home you have is an unhealthy place to be?

For some families, having to remain at home in a house that is substandard - structurally unsound, with inadequate sanitation, lack of water, inappropriate ventilation, lack of heating and cooling, etc. - is a direct threat to their very survival.

Low-income families, like those you help support through HDA programs, are hardest hit by the disasters we're seeing now: a worldwide health emergency, housing inequality, unaffordable housing, economic collapse, food shortages, and even local storms and flooding. These families are the ones most likely to lose their jobs and their homes, and with that, the hope of a better future.

But that isn't the end of the story. The call to do more is growing louder, and with your help, we will serve 100 families this year! Can we count on you to help us reach that goal? Can you help one family or more this year by making a tax-deductible donation?

You'll be helping those families the same way your support helped the Baker family in Perry County. A native of Leslie County, Jennifer Baker put herself through school, earning a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, all while holding down a full-time job and raising three kids as a single mother. Then, she met her husband, Benny Baker, three years ago, and since that time, they've been working towards owning a home. They met roadblocks at every turn until they came to the Housing Development Alliance.

"HDA talked to me about what all I had to work on, and I was ready. I was like, okay, let's do it!" said Jennifer. Jennifer and Benny worked together towards getting an HDA home, which included paying down their debts and building up their credit with help from HDA's credit counselors. In just over a year, donor support helped the Bakers move into their new home on April 2, 2020!

The Bakers and their four children are overjoyed with their 3-bedroom HDA house.

"We love it! It's amazing for our kids to be able to see that we accomplished this," Jennifer said, sitting on her porch on a cool spring morning in Lost Creek (Perry County), KY. "We contributed sweat equity, so our kids got to work on the house with us! That made everything mean so much more, because our entire family helped build this house."

And now, not only are the Bakers' children safe and secure in a beautiful new home, but their oldest daughter said owning a new home is a life goal she has. Plus, Jennifer has been inspired to pursue a new career as a certified financial planner and will soon begin her studies towards a Business Law degree so that she can help others manage their financial situations.

That is the power of housing! Your support inspires every member of a family to aspire to greater things. And because of that, Eastern Kentucky becomes an even better place to live. That's what it means to support one family, to build one house. Now, imagine that same story being repeated 100 times a year!
