There's a Housing Crisis in Eastern Kentucky - You Can Help!

Throughout the year, we've been celebrating our 30th year of providing affordable housing for Eastern Kentucky. From the housing crisis that existed before the 2022 flood, to the enormous housing need we're facing after it, we need your help to build homes Eastern Kentuckians can afford and to make affordable home repairs for very low-income families, the elderly, and homeowners living with a disability. With your help, we'll build & repair homes for more flood survivors AND build & repair a larger number of homes for low-income families in need who were not impacted by the flood but still need a better, more affordable home.

Will you help us battle the housing crisis in Eastern Kentucky?

Prior to the flood, the Housing Development Alliance was working with over 500 low-income families towards owning a new home or getting their home repaired. After the flood, which directly affected thousands of households, that number has grown significantly. Because of this disaster, we need to work on or replace 15-20% of the housing stock in our area! Between long-term, persistent poverty and the devastation of a 1,000-year flood, the need we face is huge.

But you can help! When you make a donation today, you can:

  • Help build a new home for a flood-surviving family that's currently living in a storage building on the spot where their home was destroyed (because that's all they could afford),
  • Help build a new home for a low-income single father of 3 children - a new home that will change their lives, because no more will they have to live in an overcrowded, aging single-wide trailer, and/or
  • Help an elderly disabled couple have their rickety front steps replaced with a solid porch and ramp so that they can get into and out of their home safely.

Since we've received federal funding for disaster recovery, some folks mistakenly think that we have all of the funding we'll ever need to build and repair homes - but that isn't true. There is a $600 million gap between funding already received and the funding needed to recover from the flood. And we still need to keep building homes for folks who are NOT flood survivors! All of those projects are still in need of major funding.

Together with HDA, you can help flood survivors and low-income Eastern Kentuckians have the benefit of living in a quality home they can afford - a home that will allow them to build wealth and a brighter future.
